The Masks of Naousa
One of the most impressive carnival festivals in Greece is held in Naousa, with the custom of "Boules" - dressed up dancing groups - being the highlight.
One of the most important elements of the costume is "prósopos" (πρόσωπος) a hand made bee wax mask.
You will have the privilege to visit on of the two remaining workshops that still make this masks ( and the costumes), learn about the custom's history and see how the masks are make
As a gift, you will take your own "prósopos" home with you!
Alexis will welcome you to his workshop with a traditional "κέρασμα" (kérasma / treat) of home made grappa.
He will then show you around to his workshop, were he will tell you about the custom of "Boules", and you will watch a presentation about the costumes of the participants.
Then Alexis will take you into the area of the workshop that they prepare the "prosopous" (the masks) and show you the production of a mask step by step!
Finally, you will take your own "prósopos" with you at home!
