Thessaloniki Accommodation Oikoperiigitis Hotel Sustainability

Ioannis Reklos

Ioannis (Yannis) Reklos returned to his homeland, after many years in the city, with the dream to contribute to the protection and growth of Kerkini. Friendly and true, he will welcome you at the hotel and he is always willing to join you in an early morning walk or a canoe tour at the sunset.

Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Supporting and protecting the local community and environment.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Ioannis Reklos is the owner of Oikoperiigitis owner, and aims to take active steps through his personal and business practices to help his birthplace, Kerkini, develop as a sustainable tourism destination.

Years ago, Reklos started his crusade by opening the first local environmental support centre. Bit by bit, and after tireless work over time the "Ecological Centre Kerkinis - Mpelles" was completed, which is now known as Ojkoperjigitis

Oikoperiigitis also develops various environmental training programs for schools and other local associations. In terms of tourist, they provide various environmental and agro-tourism excursions for travellers to experience Kerkini's natural beauty.

To help support the surrounding community, all staff employed at the hotel are from Kerkini village, and are provided with ongoing training. All the produce you find in their restaurant is also sourced from local producers, including from the nearby Women/Agro-tourism Cooperatives - which are also promoted for sale to tourists. Local fishermen have also had the opportunity to be trained, and have their boats repaired or improved in order to provide boat tours of the lake, thus creating further sustainable jobs.

They also seem to provide tourists with some knowledge and education about the local environment, and a presentation about the lake, the wetlands, and the issues facing the area is held every Saturday evening (or on demand).

The hotels owner[s] are clearly proud of the natrural history of Lake Kerkini, especially its bird life which was the main reason for our visit. We enjoyed an excellent early morning boat trip with Gorgio for close encounters with the Pelicans and various heron species which breed in the flooded forest.
