Byzantine Thessaloniki Tour- Half day/private

Duration: 3 hour(s) - Location: Thessaloniki

This half day (3,5  hours) private Byzantine Thessaloniki tour is a great option to learn about the history of Thessaloniki during the Byzantine Empire era and visit some of  the most important monuments in Thessaloniki.

Agios Dimitrios - Άγιος Δημήτριος

Agios Dimitrios (Saint Demetrius) is the patron saint and protector of Thessaloniki, and his church is one of Thessaloniki's landmarks. The church is a 5-aisled Basilica, keeping this form from the 7th century, when reconstructed on the ruins of an older, smaller church.

The church has suffered many destructions that destroyed many paintings and mosaics, but there are still lots to see, including the "Κρύπτη" (crypt) below the church, were St Demetrious is said to been tortured and murdered.

Panagia Halkeon (Our Virgin of the coppersmiths) - Παναγία Χαλκέων

Panagia Halkeon is located on Egnatia str, very close to Aristotle's square and the Roman Forum.

The church was build in 1028, with the classic "cross-in-square-form", with four columns and three domes, one central and two over the narthex. It was build entirely with bricks, and this why it was also known as the  "Red Church".

Acheiropoietos - Αχειροποίητος

The church of Acheiropoietos is perhaps the earliest of Thessaloniki's surviving churches. It is a tree-aisled basilica with a wooden roof and surviving marble decorations and parts of mosaics from the 5th century, as well as some parts of fine 13th century frescoes.

Agia Sophia - (Holy wisdom ) - Αγία Σοφία

The church of Agia Sophia was build in the 8th century, on the ruins of a much older and huge church, and the plans were based on those of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul .
